As an experienced mountain biker, I should probably give up some of my wisdom to those beginners out there. Here is my top 3 bits of advice for someone new to mountain biking:
Tip 1: Educate yourself on the sport. While getting right into it is pretty fun you will enjoy the sport so much more if you really find some magazines on mountain biking, read up on the newest bikes coming out and learning about some new trails. If you are on a budget, you will want to learn where you can get the best bikes for the best deals. By learning about this sport, you will be able to save some money.
Tip 2: This is very important so read carefully. You have to make sure that when you are buying a bike, it is really the right bike for you. Mountain biking is a pretty dangerous sport so you have to make sure that what you are buying works with your body weight and height. Control is important in this sport; if you cannot control your bike then you might get into some serious injuries that might prevent you from continuing to enjoy the sport.
Tip 3: This should be a no brainer but I have seen a number of people get really great mountain bikes because they can, without having any real idea on how to properly ride them. Learn how to ride your bike, if you get a special bike then be aware that the way to ride that bike will differ from others. So, let me repeat learn how to ride your bike. Start on the easy trails, gain experience and confidence first. Then you can move on to the harder trails. Take your time. No reason to go out and break your arm in your first season trying to be a pro right off the bat. Just remember to have fun too, that’s the most important thing in the end!
